What does appliance repair cost in 2026?
Completed repairs typically run 95 to 520 dollars including parts and labor, depending on the appliance and the component that failed. A service call of 69 to 89 dollars covers the diagnosis and is waived once you approve the repair itself.

Appliance repair pricing is more predictable than most people expect, because the same components fail on the same schedule. What varies is the local labor rate, the brand of the part and how accessible the component is.
The service call
Almost every company charges something to attend and diagnose. Ours runs $69 to $89 depending on the market, and it is waived when you approve the repair, so an approved job costs only the quoted repair price.
That structure is worth understanding when comparing companies. A free diagnosis is rarely free; it is usually recovered inside a higher repair price. A refundable service call is more transparent, because you can see both numbers and decide.
What you should never accept is a diagnosis fee that is not disclosed before the visit, or a repair price quoted only after the appliance has been dismantled.
Flat rate against hourly
Flat rate is better for you, and the reason is structural rather than rhetorical.
An hourly meter rewards a slow job and leaves you carrying the risk if the repair turns out to be awkward. You cannot know in advance whether a fault will take forty minutes or three hours, and the person who does know is the one being paid by the hour.
A flat price covering parts and labor is agreed before work begins and does not move afterwards. If the job runs long, that is our problem. If a bolt is seized or the installation is awkward, that is our problem too.
Typical bands by appliance
These are completed-repair ranges including parts and labor, for a mid-size market. Major metros sit toward the top and smaller cities toward the bottom.
| Appliance | Typical completed repair |
|---|---|
| Garbage disposal | $95 to $280 |
| Microwave | $110 to $320 |
| Ice maker | $110 to $330 |
| Dryer | $130 to $380 |
| Dishwasher | $135 to $390 |
| Washing machine | $140 to $400 |
| Stove or cooktop | $120 to $400 |
| Oven or range | $150 to $420 |
| Freezer | $150 to $440 |
| Refrigerator | $160 to $450 |
Where a particular job lands inside its band depends on the part, not the postcode.
What pushes a job to the top of its range
Four things, and knowing them lets you anticipate the quote.
Brand-specific electronics. Control boards and inverter boards cost multiples of what a mechanical part costs, and they are model-specific rather than generic.
Sealed-system work. Anything touching the refrigerant circuit on a refrigerator or freezer requires EPA Section 608 certification and specialist equipment, and it sits at the top of the band or above it.
Built-in installations. A built-in wall oven or integrated refrigerator takes substantially longer to access than a freestanding unit, and the parts are usually brand-specific too.
Premium brands. Sub-Zero, Viking and similar use components that are brand-specific with longer lead times. The labor schedule is the same; the parts are not.
Conversely, what keeps a job at the bottom of its band is a stocked mechanical part on an accessible freestanding appliance: a drain pump, a heating element, a thermal fuse, a door gasket, an igniter.
Four questions before you approve anything
Ask these on every visit, from any company.
What exactly failed, and how do you know? A technician who has diagnosed properly can answer this in plain language.
Is the quote flat rate covering parts and labor, or an estimate? Get the answer before work starts.
What is the warranty on the repair, and does it cover parts and labor? Ours is 90 days on both.
Given the age of this appliance, would you repair it or replace it? A technician who only ever recommends repair is not giving you an honest answer, because sometimes replacement is correct.
When the honest answer is no
Some repairs should not be done, and a good technician will say so.
A magnetron on a basic countertop microwave often costs close to a new unit. A sealed-system repair on a refrigerator past year twelve usually crosses half the price of a replacement. A failed motor on a garbage disposal costs more in labor than a new disposal costs outright.
In those cases you pay the service call for the diagnosis and nothing more. We do not earn anything from recommending a replacement, which is precisely why the recommendation is worth something.
