What appliance maintenance actually makes a difference?

Clear the dryer duct annually, vacuum refrigerator condenser coils, change the water filter every six months, descale the dishwasher in hard water areas, and protect lines in unheated spaces before winter. That is about an hour a year in total.

Most appliance maintenance advice is padded with tasks that make no measurable difference. This list is the opposite: it covers only the jobs that genuinely change how long an appliance lasts, and it adds up to roughly an hour across the whole year.

Spring

Clear the dryer duct. The single highest-value task on this list. Disconnect the transition hose and clear the duct run out to the exterior vent. Check the exterior flap opens freely, since lint and bird nests block it regularly. A restricted vent causes repeated overheating, which stresses the fuse, the element and the control, and it is a recognised contributing factor in home dryer fires.

Check washer inlet hoses. Pull the machine forward and inspect both hoses for bulges, cracks and rust at the fittings, paying attention to any kinks. These sit under constant mains pressure, so a failure floods continuously rather than during a cycle. Braided stainless hoses are a worthwhile upgrade whenever you have the machine out.

Change the refrigerator water filter. Every six months is the standard interval, so spring and autumn works well as a schedule.

Summer

Vacuum refrigerator and freezer condenser coils. With the unit unplugged, clear the coils at the rear or behind the lower front grille. This matters most going into summer, because the condenser has to reject heat into a room that is already warm. Garages and homes with pets need this more often.

Check refrigeration placement. If a refrigerator or freezer lives in a garage, confirm it is rated for the temperatures that space actually reaches. A standard unit in a 100 degree garage is operating outside its design range every day, which is when compressor and overheating faults appear.

Clear space around appliances. Refrigerators need air circulation at the back and sides. Pushing one tight into an alcove to gain counter space makes it work measurably harder.

Autumn

Descale the dishwasher. In a hard water area this is genuine maintenance rather than cleaning. Run a dishwasher descaler through an empty hot cycle. Scale narrows spray jets, insulates the heating element and adds friction in the circulation pump, and the decline is gradual enough that people adapt to it without noticing.

Clean dishwasher spray arms and filter. Hold the arms up to the light and clear blocked jets with a toothpick. Rinse the filter and clear the sump beneath it.

Change the refrigerator water filter. The second of the two annual changes.

Clean dryer moisture sensor. Wipe the two metal strips inside the drum with rubbing alcohol. Fabric softener residue insulates them, which makes the dryer end cycles early and leaves clothes damp.

Winter

Protect lines in unheated spaces. This is the seasonal task that prevents the most expensive damage. Washer inlet hoses and ice maker lines in an unheated basement, garage or porch can freeze and then split when they thaw. Insulate them, or close the supply valve if the space will be unused for a stretch.

Check door gaskets. Cold dry indoor air hardens seals. Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points around the frame; if it slides out easily anywhere, the gasket is not sealing there. This applies to refrigerators, freezers and ovens alike.

Wash the dryer lint filter. If you use fabric softener or dryer sheets, the mesh carries an invisible film that blocks airflow while looking perfectly clean. Hold it under a running tap, and if water pools rather than passing straight through, wash it with warm soapy water and a soft brush.

Every load, every week

Three habits matter more than any seasonal task.

Clean the dryer lint filter after every load. Scrape dishes rather than rinsing them completely, since modern detergents need some soil to work against. And do not overload anything, because consistently overpacked drums strain exactly the bearings, shocks and belts whose failure ends an appliance’s life rather than merely interrupting it.

What this is worth

Service life figures are ranges, not specifications. A dryer with clear airflow comfortably reaches the top of its ten to thirteen year range; one running on a clogged duct will not reach the bottom. The gap between those two outcomes is about twenty minutes of work a year.
